How Hinoki Is Used In Japanese Beauty Products | CoolJapan

Have you heard of hinoki? Hinoki, a type of Cypress tree that is native to central Japan, is considered a sacred wood for its historic use in building palaces, temples, and shrines. It’s also used to build onsens and baths. But did you know that hinoki is also used in beauty products in Japan? Yup, that's right. If you're piqued, here are three reasons why you should look for hinoki in Japanese beauty products.

It usually falls under fragrance

Hinoki is usually used as an essential oil, with aromatherapy benefits. It has a clean, earthy scent that can only be described as calming. Its otherworldly fragrance, a signature of Japanese baths, promotes relaxation and stress-relief. This is why hinoki-infused bath and personal care products are widely popular not only in Japan but internationally as well.

If you want to treat yourself to a relaxing soak, check out Amayori's Hinoki Onsen Collection which features hinoki essential oils as its main ingredient. Designed to replicate the heady aroma of a luxury bathhouse, each item in the collection promises to induce deep and almost meditative relaxation.

It has some skincare benefits too

But aside from its scent, hinoki also has some reported perks when used in cosmetics. Hinoki oil, in particular, was found to be highly effective in addressing skin inflammation. A 2015 study done on mice proved that Hinoki oil can help cure atopic dermatitis-like lesions. But as with any skincare containing essential oils, it’s best to patch test before slathering it all over your face and body.

If you're running low on moisturiser and keen to try hinoki beauty products, check out the te+te Hinoki Moisturiser. This paraben-, phthalate-, and cruelty-free body lotion also has organic aloe vera and shea butter to help replenish moisture to your skin.

You could also find it in hair care products

Aside from skincare, you may also come across some shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments with hinoki essential oil as one of its main ingredients. Hinoki has also been found to promote hair growth as well as to help improve hair and scalp health — that's on top of its antifungal and antimicrobial properties, which are natural characteristics of coniferous plants.

One example of a hinoki haircare product is Hysses Lavender Hinoki Hair Mask. If you have dry, thinning, or even normal hair, this hair treatment contains hinoki oil and lavender to restore your mane's former glory.

It’s a prized beauty ingredient outside of Japan

Unfortunately, because of its calming aspects, hinoki is on the verge of extinction. So if you’re shopping for hinoki beauty products, look for some indication that the hinoki was sustainably sourced. Aside from that, hinoki-infused products are hard to find outside Japan. But once you do get your hands on one, especially a bath product, be prepared to experience one of the most calming moments of your life.
