Japan’s autumn season is a paradise for anyone, with vibrant reds, yellows, and greens creating a stunning contrast against the country’s beautiful landscapes. Whether you’re into photography, or simply looking to enjoy the beauty of fall, Japan is one of the best places to experience it. Here are three amazing spots to explore during autumn:

Arashiyama in Kyoto Prefecture becomes a picture-perfect autumn retreat, where history and nature blend beautifully. The fiery red leaves paint the landscape like a vibrant canvas, making it a photographer’s dream. Snap away as you explore Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, or frame the stunning views from Togetsukyo Bridge, where autumn hues perfectly complement ancient Japanese architecture. And don’t forget to capture the serene moment on a peaceful boat ride, where traditional boats glide through the river, showcasing Japan’s fall beauty.

To get to Arashiyama from Kyoto Station, take the JR Sagano Line for about 15 minutes, then walk for 5-10 minutes. You can also use the Keifuku Arashiyama Line from Omiya Station or the Hankyu Railway via Katsura Station, both taking around 20 minutes. Trains are the easiest option since buses and driving can be tricky with traffic.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden stands out as one of Tokyo’s oldest and most charming spots to enjoy the beauty of fall. With history tracing back to the Edo period (1603-1867), this garden was initially created by Tokugawa Yorifusa, the founder of the Mito Tokugawa clan, and later completed by his son in 1669 with the guidance of Chinese scholar Shu Shunsui.

The garden’s design, which subtly blends Chinese influences, features miniature hills, ponds, and trees that reflect famous scenery from both countries.

Koishikawa Korakuen’s east entrance is just 3 minutes from Suidobashi Station on the JR Chuo Line. Meanwhile, the west entrance is a 5 to 10-minute walk from Iidabashi or Korakuen stations, accessible by multiple JR and subway lines.

The garden is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:30 PM. Admission is 300 yen.

Lake Kawaguchiko, Yamanashi

Golden autumn leaves line the path at Lake Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi, creating a peaceful and picturesque scene.

Lake Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture is the easiest of the Fuji lakes to reach from Tokyo, and it’s such a lovely spot to enjoy the beauty of autumn. While it’s a favourite for many, you’ll quickly see why—especially when you catch that breathtaking view of Mount Fuji framed by vibrant red maple leaves. The crisp fall air makes the mountain stand out even more, and its reflection on the calm lake is like something out of a postcard.

Walking along the lake, you'll be surrounded by all the beautiful autumn colours that make the whole area feel cosy and peaceful. It’s the perfect place to relax, take in the fresh air, and snap some stunning photos. Whether you're there for the scenery or just to enjoy a quiet moment by the water, Lake Kawaguchiko in the fall is a little slice of nature’s beauty that’s hard to beat.

Kawaguchiko Station is easily accessible from Tokyo. You can take the JR Limited Express Fuji Kaiyu from Shinjuku and reach Kawaguchiko in less than 2 hours. The highway bus from Tokyo, Shinjuku, or Haneda Airport is another fast and affordable option, with the Shinjuku route taking about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Capture the magic of Japan’s fall season with your camera in hand as you chase the vibrant colours across these stunning landscapes. From the tranquil gardens of Koishikawa Korakuen to the iconic reflection of Mount Fuji on Lake Kawaguchiko, autumn’s palette transforms these spots into natural masterpieces. With each click, the golden ginkgo, fiery maples, and serene lakes become more than just photos—they're memories framed by the beauty of Japan's autumn charm. So grab your gear, find your focus, and let the fall colours bring your photography journey to life!
