The Japanese kimono’s colourful patterns and intricate layering that combine elegance and modesty make it popular among locals and tourists alike. It’s also one of the most recognisable traditional outfits in the world. Those who have tried wearing one would know the complex method of wearing it, where the entire look is tied together — literally and metaphorically — by the binding belt known as the obi sash.
Having a variety of lengths and materials, an obi sash can sometimes cost more than an entire kimono outfit if it's made of the finest and rarest materials and is handwoven. It also has different kinds, namely: the maru obi (the most traditional and meticulously made), the fukuro obi (less formal than the maru obi but serves as a more accessible alternative), the Nagoya obi (lighter, more convenient, and affordable compared to the previous two), the hanhaba obi (narrower in width, whose material is more reflective of casual wear), the black obi (worn with traditional mourning clothes), and the white obi (worn with traditional wedding clothes).
